Biography
A fourth-generation Chinese-Canadian, Chong’s artistic journey began with honours from Emily Carr – mid 80’s. His evolution from visual communications to digital photography has consistently explored themes of light, from early b/w infrared film to capturing unseen light with HDR technology. His current works reflect a spiritual resonance with natural elements, shaping an illuminating narrative through the spectrum of climate art.
Chong has lived in the lower mainland for over five decades and his 89 Gore Avenue studio and gallery is located at The Edge Building in Railtown, Vancouver, BC since the late 90’s. He exhibits year-round in the open studio event: FirstSaturday.ca (First Saturday of each month), the annual Eastside Culture Crawl, and select fine art galleries, festivals etc. Garrett has been profiled in Vancouver is Awesome, TriCity News and co-featuring on CBC-Vancouver Radio, SFU Radio, Fairchild Media, Stir Magazine and more.
Artist Statement
Eroded Origins: Speak For Me ! (The Flow, The Cut and The Blessing) is a climate art initiative that transforms passive viewing into active advocacy. Designed to spark awareness and dialogue, the project explores the interconnectivity of ecosystems and humanity’s evolving role in preserving the planet. Rather than simply documenting environmental degradation, Eroded Origins invites audiences to reimagine their relationship with nature—emphasizing how deeply human actions and ecological systems are intertwined in shaping the horrible-beauty of Earth’s future.
At the core of this initiative is Speak For Me !, an interactive engagement platform that encourages participants to give voice to the environment. Inspired by the Art Matters movement, this component poses reflective, imaginative questions such as: If the forest could speak, what would it say? and What is your age? These prompts create symbolic connections between personal identity and the natural world—where ages may be represented as tree rings, linking individual stories to the planet’s timeline.
Through workshops, seminars, and interactive installations, the project fosters meaningful connections between communities and nature. Audience responses are woven into evolving digital artworks, making participants co-creators in a living climate narrative. In this way, Eroded Origins becomes a platform for reflection, collective responsibility, and environmental stewardship—using art as a catalyst for both awareness and action.
As a climate artist, I strive to engage all stakeholders in dynamic conversations about environmental care and global conservation. By exploring the physical, emotional, and symbolic openings within liminal spaces in the natural world, I aim to inspire a deeper sense of connection and responsibility toward our environment.
Living and working on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Dakelh (Cariboo), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in Vancouver, I hope my work serves as a bridge between cultures and perspectives—promoting mutual respect and collaboration in the spirit of environmental preservation.
We pose two questions:
1. If the forest could communicate, what would it say?… Speak for me!
2. What is your age (Patron)?
